Some of the following firms maintain Web sites, which are listed and allow for easier comparison shopping. Prices from the Web sites range from $12-$35/pound plus shipping, with the median price being $17/pound. You may be able to avoid shipping costs by picking up the worms. While some firms recommend starting with two pounds of worms, our experience is that worms reproduce rapidly and one pound is sufficient as long as you do not overload the bin until you know your worms can handle your volume of food scraps. There have been instances of worms dying during shipment so you may want to ask about company policy on such problems.

You can also ask for worms from anyone who maintains a compost bin and uses it to compost food scraps. You will probably also get a few other "composting critters" from such a method, but such insects are beneficial and will stay in the bin if it is properly maintained.
