Low-Water Use Landscaping |
On March 15, Glendale Water and Power sponsored a free talk by the renowned local garden expert, Lili Singer, on “Native and California Friendly Plants.” Since we are in the midst of a draught, and there is a predicted long-term decline in local rainfall, GWP is hoping residents will use such plants to reduce the use of water on their yards. Lili noted that besides using less water, native plants also have the advantage of attracting wildlife (particularly birds and butterflies) and reducing the generation of waste and the need for fertilizer, thereby creating a more sustainable landscape in harmony with our local environment.
She distributed a list of resources for native plants, including books, Websites, organizations, and sources of plants. Two new books that were highlighted were California Native Plants for the Garden by Carol Bornstein, David Fross and Bart O’Brien, Care and Maintenance of Southern California Native Plant Gardens by Bart O’Brien, Betsey Landis and Ellen Mackey.
The more nearby source of plants and books is the Theodore Payne Foundation, 10459 Tuxford Street in Sun Valley, 818-768-1802. The largest local native plant botanic garden and book store is the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, 1500 N. College Avenue in Claremont, 909-625-8767. Both of these groups and the California Native Plant Society (www.cnps.org) hold annual plant sales.
