Press Releases

VIEW ALL PRESS RELEASES

  • At approximately 8:27 pm on Monday, May 21, 2012 the Glendale Fire Department received information from the Burbank Airport Tower that a plane was approaching in distress. A short time after, Burbank Airport Tower reported that they lost track of the plane about three miles east of the airport. At that time, Glendale Communications started to receive 911 calls from residents in the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Glenwood Rd that a plane was down. Glendale Fire and Police Departments responded to the scene.

Initial investigations reveal that the plane struck three power poles and a tree before coming to rest in front of 1207 Glenwood Rd. No one on the ground was injured and no homes were damaged. Initially six families were evacuated and three continue to remain evacuated. National Traffic Safety Board, which has jurisdiction over air crashes, is on scene. Removal of the aircraft is underway.

Upwards of 2000 residents were without power after the crash. Power has been restored to all but 300 residents. The remaining customers may be without power until 2 pm this afternoon as Glendale Water and Power crews replace the damaged power poles and power lines.

Currently, Glenwood Rd from Highland to Grandview is closed. All intersecting streets between the closures are also closed one block north and one block south.

As daylight approaches, if residents find airplane debris on their properties they are requested not to touch the materials. Anyone who finds airplane debris is asked to call the Glendale Police Department at 818-548-4911 so the evidence may be documented and retrieved for NTSB.

At this time it appears that the crash may be due to a mechanical failure. The pilot was transported to LA County USC and was treated for minor injuries, including bruising, and has been released.

Parents that have students going to Mark Keppel Elementary School, Toll Middle School and Hoover High School are asked to approach their respective schools this morning from Pacific Ave.

Updates regarding road closures and electrical lines to follow.

UPDATE: Full power was restored to the remaining 300 residents at 11:45 am.

Click It or Ticket – Day and Night

    Glendale, CA –
Motorists who refuse to wear their seat belts – beware. The 2012 start-of-summer Click It or Ticket enforcement mobilization kicks off May 21. By cracking down on those who don’t buckle up, we will help save lives.

The Glendale Police Department is joining with other state and local law enforcement officers to help save more lives by strongly enforcing seat belt laws around the clock. Seat belts are the most effective piece of life saving equipment on your car.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2010 nationally, 61 percent of the 10,647 passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes overnight were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the fatal crash. This is compared to the 42 percent killed during the daytime hours.

“Too many drivers and passengers on the road are not wearing their seat belts at night, and it all too often ends in tragedy,” said Chief Ronald De Pompa. “Our goal is to save more lives, so the Glendale Police Department will be out enforcing seat belt laws around the clock.”

Seat belt use saves thousands of lives across America each year and the Glendale Police Department is helping spread the word. NHTSA statistics show that in 2010 alone, seat belts saved an estimated 12,546 lives nationwide.

Yet, too many motorists may need a tough reminder. In 2010, 22,187 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in motor vehicle crashes, according to NHTSA, and 51 percent of them were NOT wearing seat belts at the time of their fatal crashes.

Younger motorists and men are particularly at risk. Data shows that in 2010, 62 percent of young adult vehicle occupants between the ages 18-34, who were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes, were not buckled up at the time of the crash – the highest percentage of any age group. The number jumps to 66 percent when just men in this age group are included.

While this year’s Click It or Ticket enforcement mobilization runs from May 21 through June 3, motorists should know that officers are out enforcing seat belt laws year-round. Total costs of a first time ticket are at least $142.

    Glendale Police Department Targets
Impaired Drivers with DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint

Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over

Glendale, CA – Glendale Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on May 11, 2012 at an undisclosed location within the city between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. “Over the course of the past year, DUI collisions have resulted in 102 wrecks injuring 33 of our friends and neighbors in Glendale,” said Sgt. Richard Phillips.

This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies while also checking drivers for proper licensing. A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effect it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged. It also raises awareness of the dangers of driving impaired, encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  • Glendale, CA – Former Glendale City Councilman John Drayman has been indicted.

The 28-count Grand Jury indictment was unsealed this morning by Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg after the 54-year-old former Councilman pleaded not guilty. Drayman, who left office last year, was taken into custody and is being held on $200,000 bail.

Deputy District Attorneys Susan Schwartz and Dana Aratani with the Public Integrity Division are prosecuting the case.

Allegations of embezzlement were brought to the attention of the Glendale Police Department in May 2011. For much of the year Detectives worked to complete the investigation. Detectives also engaged with investigators from the California Franchise Tax Board. Upon completion it was turned over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney for consideration / prosecution.

The Grand Jury Indictment alleges Drayman embezzled an estimated $305,000.00 between January 1, 2004 and April 30, 2011 from the Montrose Shopping Park Association and laundered the money through his personal bank account. He allegedly committed perjury by omitting sources of income on his Fair Political Practices Forms. The indictment also alleges he submitted a false credit application to a mortgage lender in 2010 and failed to report income to the California Franchise Tax Board.

Drayman is charged in the criminal case, number BA396116, with one count of embezzlement by a public officer, 10 counts of filing a false tax return, five counts of money laundering, three counts of forgery, one count of submitting a false financial statement and eight counts of perjury. The indictment also includes an excessive loss allegation that the loss exceeds $100,000.00.

If convicted, he faces in excess of 10 years in prison.

He returns to Department 100 at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012 for a source of bail motion to determine that those funds used are not proceeds from his alleged criminal activity.
