Targeted Rail Crossing Enforcement
When: Wednesday March 22, 2006 at 6:00 a.m.
Where: Glendale Train Station
400 W. Cerritos, Glendale
Who: Glendale Police Department
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
Metrolink
Daily train traffic thru the Glendale corridor averages 98 trains per day including Metrolink's Ventura Line, Antelope Valley Line, Union Pacific freight trains, Amtrak California and west coast trains.
The mission of the Glendale Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is to enforce applicable laws fairly and impartially, protecting the rights of all people involved, while preventing property damage and personal injury. Police Officers will work to ensure the safety of the railroad by strict enforcement of existing Vehicle Code laws pertaining to railroad gate crossings and safe vehicle operation.
The Glendale Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will assign motorcycle officers to work in conjunction with Metrolink to accomplish the Mission of grade crossing enforcement along the Metrolink rail corridors.
Officers will observe the designated grade crossings to prevent pedestrian and vehicular traffic from interfering with train movement and violating applicable traffic laws.
Motor Officers will be assigned to various grade crossings along the train corridor to enforce rail related traffic violations. If it is determined that one grade crossing becomes more problematic than others, officers will shift there resources to that area.
During our targeted enforcement period from 6:00 am to 1:30 pm, there will be a total of 28 local Metrolink and Amtrak trains. An undetermined number of freight and Amtrak west coasters (approximately 4) traversing the Glendale corridor.
Invited media will be provided a press package upon arrival. Enforcement deployment will occur at 6:00 am.
Sgt. Tom Lorenz and Ofc. John Balian from the Glendale Police Departments PIO’s office will be available for comments at 6:00 am at the Glendale Train Station located at 400 W. Cerritos in the City of Glendale.
Cameras will be allowed to board the trains to tape Metrolink on the rails from Glendale to Burbank and return. Cameras must first check in with the PIO staff. Locations of grade crossing enforcement will also be provided that morning. Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau, Metrolink and the Glendale Police Department Traffic Unit will also be available for comment, between the hours of 6:00 am to 9:00 am. Enforcement will continue to 1:30 pm.
