Section 8 HQS Inspections


The following are a few Housing Quality Standard requirements for a dwelling unit.

Ceiling and Walls: Ceiling and walls must be in good condition. Not acceptable are large cracks or holes that allow drafts, severe bulging or leaning, large amounts of loose or falling surface such as plaster.

Floors: A floor that is in good condition. Not acceptable are large cracks or holes, missing or warped floor boards or covering that could cause someone to trip.

Windows: Every window must be in good condition. Not acceptable are windows with badly cracked, broken or missing panes, and windows that do not shut or, when shut, do not keep out the weather.

Food Storage/Preparation Area: The kitchen must have some space to store and prepare food.

Appliances: The unit must have a working stove, oven and refrigerator. Appliances may be provided by either the property owner or tenant.

Sink: The kitchen and bathroom must each have a sink with hot and cold running water.

Toilet/Tub/Shower: The bathroom must have a flush toilet that works and must have either a tub or shower with hot and cold running water.
