The City of Glendale has been designated a California Healthy City by California Healthy Cities & Communities since 1996. Our community is one of only 50 cities and communities statewide to achieve this prestigious designation, largely due to the on-going efforts of the Glendale Healthier Community Coalition.
Coalition partners believe that a healthy community is achieved when every resident has the opportunity to experience a high quality of life. Each year the Coalition promotes programs to encourage and enable Glendale residents to lead healthy lifestyles. These programs include health fairs, free or low-cost immunizations, activities for at-risk youth, HIV/AIDS education, job-training, continuum of care services for homeless individuals, mental health services, and much more. This group meets quarterly.

As you know Glendale is a great place to make a living and raise a family. The City of Glendale values the contribution our retailers make to the community and is requesting your support in our efforts to reduce the access of tobacco and tobacco paraphernalia among our minors. Research shows that 3 out of 4 smokers started before they were 18 and it takes only weeks or days for a child to become addicted to tobacco. If this trend is allowed to continue, 3,504 children in the city of Glendale alone will die prematurely from smoking. Our City Council recognizes that together, we can take control of this grim statistic. On Tuesday, December 5, 2006 Glendale City Council voted unanimously that local legislation be implemented to regulate the licensing of tobacco retailers in order to reduce and prevent access to tobacco products and paraphernalia among minors.

Fulbright Scholar Visits Neighborhood Services
Dr. Adisak Sattam, a visiting Fulbright Scholar from Thailand, visited the City of Glendale’s Neighborhood Services Division. A professor of Public Health at Sukhothai Thammathirat University in Thailand, Dr. Sattam was interested in observing how Glendale identifies and addresses environmental health issues that affect the community. Dr. Sattam toured Glendale’s residential neighborhoods and business districts, learned about the role code enforcement plays in determining public health, observed outreach and education programs, and met with City staff to gather more information about the City’s participation in California Healthy Cities and Communities.
