Aquatic professionals from a wide array of aquatic organizations are reinforcing safe swimming rules, programs, activities and resources in celebration of May 2013 as National Water Safety Month.

The City of Glendale is encouraging the community to get involved in water safety activities and programs throughout the summer. The National Water Safety Month website has many free resources you can use to encourage swimming safety, including posters and a downloadable NWSM logo and video to display on websites.

Drowning is preventable! Visit www.nationalwatersafetymonth.org to learn more about the campaign, national water safety events and what you can do to help others swim safely this summer.

Summer 2013 Learn-To-Swim Session Dates, Times and Locations

  • Monday – Thursday classes run 4 days per week for 25 minutes per class.
  • Friday, Saturday & Sunday classes run 3 days per week for 35 minutes per class.
  • The following classes are available:
    • Parent & Me | 6 mo-3.5 yrs
    • Levels 1-6 | 3.5 yrs – 15 yrs
    • Adults | 16 yrs & older
  • Levels 1A, 1B, 2, 3 & 4 typically have a maximum of 7 students. Parent & Me, Level 5/6 & Adult classes typically have a maximum of 10 students.
  • Swim lesson participants MUST be present on the first day of the scheduled swim lesson; otherwise the participant will be automatically dropped from the class. If you know in advance that the participant will be unable to attend the first class session, you must call and receive approval from Ryan Hairapetian or Courtney Maglio at (818) 937-7433 before the first class begins. You must indicate your child’s precise swim level at this time.
  • PRIVATE ONE–ON–ONE LESSONS are available for $30 per child, per 30 minutes.
  • NO REFUNDS will be issued for aquatics programs.
  • When choosing a swim class, you should register for the TIME you’re interested in because all levels are offered at all times (with the exception of Parent & Me and Adult classes which are specially marked).

2013 Novice Water Polo Team - Glendale Polo Bears

Prerequisites:

  1. Participants must have the endurance to complete a one hour water polo workout.
  2. Water Polo coach approval at the first day of practice.
  3. Water Polo participants are STRONGLY encouraged to continue swim lessons until Level VI is passed.

2013 Novice Swim Team - Glendale Gators

Prerequisites:

  1. Participants must have the endurance to complete a one hour swim workout.
  2. Participation in daily workouts as well as attendance to the majority of swim meets, typically held on Saturdays.
  3. Swim coach approval at the swim team try-outs on the first day of practice. If the youth is accepted on the team, participants may make payment at the pool site. If payment has already been made and the youth is not accepted onto the team, a full refund will be issued.
  4. Swim team participants are STRONGLY encouraged to continue swim lessons until Level VI is passed

Glendale Infant & Preschool Program

PARENT & ME STARFISH (Ages 6 mo. - 3.5 yrs). Adult participation required. Students in "Starfish" will learn to adjust to the water, water entry, jumping in, front kick, blowing bubbles, front glide, back float, underwater exploration, arm movement, and safety skills. Parent skills will be taught including towing with personal floatation devices and rescues.

Glendale Learn to Swim Program

Level I-A Turtles (Ages 3.5 - 5 yrs.)

"Turtles" will learn to feel comfortable in the water. Students will learn to adjust to water entry, perform the front kick, how to glide and float, breathing control, underwater exploration, beginner strokes, and various safety skills.

Level I-B Frogs (Ages 6 - 12 yrs)

"Frogs" will learn to feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. Students will expand upon the skills taught in "Turtles".

Level II Sea Horses (Ages 6 - 12 yrs)

"Sea Horses" will learn fundamental skills, including locomotion skills, self-help, and basic rescue skills taught in previous levels.

Level III Fish (Ages 6 -15 yrs)

"Fish" will learn to build on the skills learned in Level II. This includes coordination of the front and back crawl, introduction to elementary backstroke, diving and treading water, along with additional safety skills.

Prerequisite: Children must possess either a Level II completion certificate or skills equivalent to that level, including the ability to swim five yards unassisted.

Level IV Dolphins (Ages 6 - 15 yrs)

"Dolphins" will learn to develop confidence and improve other aquatic skills. The breaststroke, sidestroke, and basic turning at the wall will be introduced. Personal safety and rescue techniques are also emphasized.

Prerequisite: Children must be at least 6 years of age and possess either a Level III completion certificate or skills equivalent to that level, including the ability to swim 15 yards unassisted. Children at this level are encouraged to try out for the summer swim team.

Level V/VI Sharks (Ages 6 - 15 yrs)

"Sharks" will to learn coordination and refinement of keystrokes. The butterfly, open turns, and the feet-first surface dive are introduced. Children at this level are encouraged to try out for the summer swim team. The objective of Level VI is to polish strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances. Students develop considerable endurance by the end of this course. Additional flip turns and the long shallow dive are taught.

Prerequisite: Children entering Level V & VI must have a Level IV certificate or must meet all requirements to complete Level IV. Children at this level are encouraged to try out for the summer swim team.

Adult Lessons (Ages 16 yrs and older)

The objective of this class is to help adults achieve their desired swimming ability.

Junior Lifeguard Information

This academy will teach the American Red Cross principles of Community First Aid and Safety, Water Safety Instructor Aid, general pool-lifeguard scanning methods, and various lifeguarding techniques, including reaching and throwing assists.

Splish Splash Family Fun Day

The City of Glendale will be hosting the annual Splish Splash Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 13 from 12 noon – 5:00 pm at Pacific Community Pool. Join us for a great day of fun which will include; organized games, relay races, a treasure hunt and more.

In partnership with the American Red Cross, a water safety presentation will take place at noon. People who attend the presentation will be allowed free admission to pool on this day.

Special Needs Accommodations

The Community Services & Parks Department will provide any reasonable accommodation toward the inclusion of a participant. Please contact our Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator at (818) 548-3785 two weeks prior to the start of the program. Ample time is required to determine the needs of each request.
