Cultural Affairs Section
The mission of the Cultural Affairs Section is to "enrich the human experience; reinforce Glendale's identity and civic pride through arts and culture and to recognize the importance of arts to our quality of life and to the local economy. This is accomplished by consciously integrating arts and culture into the daily life of the people of Glendale through urban design, planning, economic development, and education.
Current projects, programs and initiatives include:
- E-mail distribution of information.
- Diamond Awards for Achievement in the Arts
- Annual Open Studio Tour and Gallery Exhibition
- Co-production of Unity Fest, annual cultural festival
- Participation in Americans for the Arts national arts and economic prosperity study
- Management of public arts projects and program development
- Assessment and Update of Strategic Plan for the Arts
- Arts Mixers
Additionally this section staffs the Arts and Culture Commission whose powers and duties generally are: to facilitate interaction among artists, to promote art activities and education, to recognize achievement in the arts, to provide a forum or other means for public participation in the arts, to serve as an advisory group on the arts to the Council, City boards and commissions, to advise Council on the need for inclusion of, and the role of arts in economic development, to support and assist existing organizations involved in the arts and/or culture in Glendale, to reinforce the City's identity and civic pride through arts and culture, and to recognize the importance of the arts in the City's quality of life.

BACKGROUND
A symposium entitled "The Future of Arts in Glendale: Partnerships of Success" held in October, 1996, explored the value of the arts to the community, local resources and strengths for promoting greater art activity in the future. Based on the symposium's findings, in 1997, the City Council, under the leadership of then Mayor Sheldon Baker, directed the development of a comprehensive assessment and strategic plan of the arts in Glendale. A group of twenty enthusiastic individuals from various backgrounds throughout the community were appointed to conduct an assessment of the arts and develop this plan.
This plan was accepted by the City in 1998. As implementation to Strategic Direction 7, Goal 14 to "establish an organizational structure which provides for coordination, promotion and stability of the Strategic Direction for the Arts," the Arts and Culture Commission was created in 1999. The Commission's first meeting was in February, 2000. Eve Rappoport was hired as Community Services Supervisor in April, 2000.
