Glendale Narrows Riverwalk
Phase I of the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk, due to begin construction this summer, will provide a half mile of landscaped recreational trail along the north bank of the Los Angeles River across from Griffith Park. It will include a small entry park that will serve as a staging area for hikers and bicyclists, a separate staging area for equestrians using local trails, another small park area for walking and picnicking, enhancement of wildlife habitat in the river channel, and educational and interpretive exhibits. The project is funded by grants from the California River Parkways program and the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District. North East Trees is the design-build consultant on the project.
Most of Phase II of the project has been built as part of the Fairmont Avenue flyover extension off the 134 Freeway that is now nearing completion. Master Planning efforts for the remainder of Phase II and all of Phase III are now under way as the result of a Community-Based Planning grant from Caltrans. AECOM Technical Services is the consultant for this Master Planning effort which will include linking Phases I and II, as well as exploring the potential for a bridge across the Verdugo Wash.
Phase III will explore the prospect for what may become the signature element of the project – a multi-user bridge across the Los Angeles River from the Riverwalk to the Los Angeles Bike Path and on to Griffith Park, specifically for non-motorized travel between these recreational facilities.
February 18, 2010 Community Meeting
On February 18, 2010 a community meeting was held at Pacific Community Center. More than 40 residents from Glendale, as well as the Atwater Village and Griffith Park neighborhoods of Los Angeles attended. The response to the project from residents in all areas was extremely positive.
June 30, 2010 Community Open House
On June 30, 2010 a community open house was held at the Glendale Environmental Management Center near the Los Angeles River. Over 30 residents from Glendale, Atwater Village and the Griffith Park area attended. They viewed and commented on potential bridge locations and bridge designs, as well made a visit to the nearby Riverwalk site.
