POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT

OPEN EXAMINATION
SALARY $5,760 per month (Upon graduation from the
academy, and approval of Police management, the Police Officer Recruit will be
promoted to the probationary safety classification of Police Officer at a
salary range of $5,760 to $7,529. All
salaries shown include the PERS contribution which is deducted for employee’s
retirement benefits.)

NOTE
Appointees will remain as
non-sworn probationary Police Officer Recruits throughout the academy. Such employees serve on an “at-will” basis
for the duration of the academy and while on probation. Upon successful graduation from the academy,
Police Officer Recruits will be placed in the classification of Police Officer,
a sworn position which has a one-year probationary period.
THE POSITION
A non-sworn position
participating in pre-academy and actual Police training academy in preparation
to perform the following essential
functions performed by Police Officers:
Responds to calls for service regarding accidents, emergencies, crimes,
threats, altercations and/or requests for aid.
Provides information and assistance to the public and promotes good
public relations. Administers first aid
to injured persons. Interviews,
interrogates and records statements from witnesses, suspects and victims. Identifies relevant facts and prepares
written reports on incidents and cases assigned. Apprehends suspects by driving safely at high
speeds, chasing suspects on foot, climbing over obstacles, physically subduing
suspects and utilizing self-defense techniques. Enforces traffic laws, directs
traffic, issues citations and warnings.
Investigates accidents and accident scenes. Investigates matters involving juveniles,
reports of child neglect and juvenile delinquency. Refers juveniles to the appropriate
authorities. Serves subpoenas, serves
warrants, testifies in court, marks and stores evidence, apprehends suspects,
makes arrests as prescribed by law, and confers with City/District Attorney's
Office to provide information for case preparation. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the
duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or
as the situation requires.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
AGE: Minimum age 20 years at the time of
application.
1. High
school graduation or GED or CHSPE equivalent.
2. Applicants must be of good moral character, with no felony
convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving
Moral turpitude.
3. Must be fluent in both English and Armenian
CITIZENSHIP: U.S. Citizenship, or a permanent
resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.
DRIVER'S LICENSE: Valid California Class C
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
1. College
level course work in written and oral communication, Police Science or a
related field.
2. Knowledge
and/or use of Personal Computers.
MEDICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL STANDARDS: All candidates must
pass a pre-placement medical examination and a psychological evaluation.
HEARING: Acceptable as to City standards.
VISION: Acceptable as to City standards. Acceptable color vision.
WEIGHT: Weight in proportion to height according to
medical standards.
SELECTION PROCEDURE (Veterans’ Credits

WRITTEN: (PASS/FAIL) To determine the applicant’s
general ability and aptitude for police work.

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST: (PASS/FAIL) This Physical Agility Test includes: a 99 yard obstacle course, a 165 pound body
drag, a chain link fence climb, a six foot solid fence climb and a 500 yard
run.
ORAL: (Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant’s
experience, education, and personal fitness for the position.
PERFORMANCE TEST: (PASS/FAIL) This test will
assess bilingual abilities in Armenian.
Candidates not passing this test part may still achieve a place on the
Police Officer Recruit (non-bilingual) eligible list if they pass all other
exam parts.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: All finalists will
be subjected to a comprehensive background investigation. A polygraph will be required.
MEDICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS: Candidates who successfully pass the
background investigation and are conditionally offered a position will be required
to successfully complete an extensive medical and psychological examination
prior to appointment.
NOTE: Candidates must pass all phases of
the testing process to be further considered.
RESIDENCE:
Candidates hired into this position are required to live within a 40
mile radius of the Glendale
Civic Center.

FAILING THE PHYSICAL AGILITY WILL BE INVITED TO RETAKE THE PHYSICAL AGILITY
TEST WITHIN ONE YEAR OF THE INITIAL WRITTEN EXAMINATION.
Names of qualified applicants will be ranked on the list according to
final grade without reference to date of examination. TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE
ANNOUNCED. The City of Glendale
conforms with State and Federal obligations to make reasonable accommodation
