Recruitment Process
Applications are held until job listing is closed or there are a sufficient number of applicants to proceed with testing.
Staff reviews all applications to identify the most highly qualified candidates for the position. Notices are sent out to applicants for the appropriate type of examination, i.e., written, oral or performance test.
After examination is graded (allow approximately 2 1/2 weeks for this process), notices will be sent out to those passing the examination to appear for the next phase in the examination process. (Those applicants receiving a score of under 70 will be notified they did not score high enough to continue in the selection process.)
After all portions of the examination process are graded, scores will be finalized. Applicants are listed on the eligible list according to their total score, highest score ranking #1.
You will receive written notification of your score. (The Human Resources Department will not give a score by telephone; it must be done by mail.)
The top three people on the eligible list will be interviewed by the Department with the vacancy and one person will be selected. This will cause everyone on the list to move up one place. This procedure is repeated for every vacancy.
An open eligible list is valid for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years. Promotional lists are valid for two years. An open list may be cancelled any time it is over one year old, or less than three names remain on the list.
Certain positions for which the City of Glendale recruits fall outside of the Civil Service process, and may not utilize the above examination process. Such positions include hourly and unclassified jobs.
Once you have applied for a position, necessary information on examination dates, times and results will be provided by mail.
Common Questions and Answers Regarding Civil Service Examinations
What is the examination about and what can I study for it?
Information is included within each job bulletin under the headings of knowledges, skills & abilities and "Selection Process". Your local library has a series of books on how to study for a Civil Service examination depending on the subject matter.
Do I have to bring anything to the examination?
The notice to appear for examination will list anything you are allowed to bring with you. Otherwise, calculators, reference materials or other items will not be allowed.
Can I reschedule my testing date or time?
The majority of written and oral examinations are given only one time. Each applicant is scheduled for a given time for oral examinations. If you are unable to appear for any part of the examination process, please contact the Human Resources Department immediately.
Can I put my name on a list to be notified about future examinations?
We do not have a service for future notifications at this time. Please call the City of Glendale job hotline at 818.548.2127 or view our website for information on current openings.
Why must I fill out a separate application for each position applied for?
Applications are maintained in specific job classification folders. Therefore, to be considered for a position, an individual must have filed an application for the specific job classification. Resumes are not accepted in lieu of an official City job application.
How long will the examination take?
Written examinations will require approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours. This, however, can vary depending on the position. Oral examinations are generally 30 minutes.
What is the difference between an Open Exam and a Promotional Exam?
Promotional Exams are limited to current City employees. Open Exams are open to the general public.
We suggest applicants retain a copy of their application. The Human Resources Department does not provide copies.
